May 2017 NewsletterA round up of news and views United Nations Global Road Safety Week - Thank you to everyone who gathered in Marlborough High Street and outside St Peter's School, for the photo opportunity in support of Road Safety Week. The messages that we displayed were 'Slow Down', '20's Plenty' and 'Let kids breathe'. You can see the photos and read the article on the Gazette and Herald website, here... Levels of PM10 particulates outside St Peter's School were above the safe limit on 18 separate days during May, according to Wiltshire Council's Air Quality website. Friends of the Earth are calling for the government to phase out diesel vehicles by 2025, you can sign their petition here... We are also planning to take part in FoE's Clean Air week of action from 24 June - 2 July, in an effort to force the government to take the air pollution problem more seriously.
What is a Food Assembly? - A Food Assembly allows local people to get together to buy the best food available, directly from local farmers and foodmakers. You order food on-line from a range of local producers, then pay before picking it up at a local venue. We are currently looking for a venue in or near Marlborough. This will be used as a meeting point for local food & drink producers to give their customers their pre-paid orders. We would need it for about 3 hours once a week around 5 -7.30pm, for the foreseeable future. The venue needs to have free parking and ground floor access. The space should be large enough to put up about 10 tables and move around. This could be a village hall, pub, cafe, meeting room, we're open to suggestions! The Food Assembly is a community focussed scheme which aims to increase the market and the income for local businesses, while putting customers directly in touch with their food sources. For this reason we are looking for a venue which would be free, or very low cost, perhaps with spin-offs for the owner such as a cafe or pub so that people can meet, sit and have a drink if they want. Paris Climate Change Agreement, latest - The EU will by-pass the Trump Administration. The European Union has rejected Donald Trump’s offer to renegotiate the Paris climate agreement and pledged instead to bypass Washington to work with US business leaders and state governors to implement the historic accord’s commitments. Less than 24 hours after the US president announced his decision to withdraw from the 2015 agreement and strike a new, less ambitious deal with the rest of the world, Brussels declared its outright refusal to engage in such talks. EU officials will instead cut out the White House to deal directly with the US states and major corporations, many of whom have already pledged to live by the terms forged in Paris. Read more...
