July 2013 NewsletterA round up of news and views Cycle Racks - Our Town Council has voted overwhelmingly for the provision of 9 new cycle racks on Marlborough High Street. This means that there will be sufficient secure parking for 25 bicycles. You can view their resolution, passed on 15th July here... A report on the 234 responses to Alison's Cycle Rack Petition will be presented at the next Marlborough Area Board meeting on Tuesday 24th September in the Town Hall at 7.30pm. Your support will be most welcome. Chairperson for TM - we are currently accepting nominations, this year's AGM will be on Thursday 12th September. Throwaway Britain: Thursday 1 August at 9 p.m. on ITV. The programme investigated what happens to the millions of tonnes that we throw away each year. A third still ends up in landfill. What can be done to reduce the rubbish we generate? The Climate Group is urging us to divest from fossil fuels - you can down-load the Guide to Ethical Funds, here... and sign the 350.org petition here... or perhaps, as others in Transition Marlborough believe, this does not make sense - let us know your views. Claire Perry, MP has called on the Transport Minister to protect our local train services - by bringing forward the electrification of the Newbury to Bedwyn line to 2016, looking into the possibility of extending electrication as far as Pewsey and maintaining our train services at current levels, read her blog post here... Fuel Poverty - At least 795 families in Marlborough are likely to be in fuel poverty next Winter, according to Wiltshire Council. Unfortunately these families will be unable to access the Carbon Saving Communities obligation, i.e. funds that have been set aside by the big energy companies to pay for energy-saving measures for low income households. We are compiling a list of case studies of households that require additional funds to improve energy efficiency to present to the Energy Minister, when he visits Marlborough in November. Local Food Bank - the Food Group recently met with representatives of local faith groups in order to determine whether there is need to set up a food bank here in Marlborough. In the meantime members of the wholefood, bulk-buying groups are making regular donations of ethically-sourced wholefoods to the Food Bank in Devizes. Find out more here... Thanks
