Public transport in the Marlborough area is extremely vulnerable to the impacts of austerity.  Already most of us depend on the car for shopping and for getting to and from work because of our poor and unreliable public transport links. Many of Marlborough’s commuters are forced to travel to the nearest train stations in Bedwyn or Pewsey by car because the bus service is not properly integrated and non-existant before 8.30am.  This is leading to serious parking problems in Great Bedwyn.  Meanwhile students face long and expensive bus journeys to colleges in Swindon and Chippenham.

Electric car Furthermore, Marlborough was designated an 'Air Quality Management Area' in 2010. This is because increasing traffic congestion in Marlborough's narrow streets is causing high levels of pollutants, such as Nitrogen dioxide and ultra-fine particles (PM10 and PM2.5) to build up. These pollutants are associated with respiratory problems, including asthma, emphysema, stroke and lung cancer.  Wiltshire Council is legally obliged to develop a strategy to reduce toxic emissions down to levels that will not harm vulnerable people, by 2020. The Transport Group has come up with a series of recommendations to reduce traffic congestion in Marlborough and is working with the local community and Town Councillors to ensure they are implemented.

The Transport Group is also working with other community transport groups; and also lobbying local unitary councillors, bus and train companies and our MP on some of the following key issues:

  • Improving broad-band to enable home-working in Marlborough.
  • Creating local skilled green jobs.
  • Supporting Bedwyn Trains Passenger Group in its campaign to prevent the direct service between Bedwyn and London Paddington from being cut.
  • Campaigning to restore and electrify the railway line between Savernake and Marlborough, find out more here...
  • Improving local bus services and campaigning for a bus shelter on the south side of the High Street; see also: Campaign for Better Transport
  • Promoting car sharing.
  • Promoting safe cycling through the provision of a cycle network that is fit for purpose.
  • Campaiging for cycle racks in the centre of the High Street.
  • Converting local supermarket trucks to run on renewable energy.
  • Working with the Food Group to improve local food production.
  • Putting Marlborough on the electric vehicle charging network.
